MTC offers a range of options for exchange if you find you can no longer attend on your chosen date.
Tickets can be exchanged to another date of the same production 24 hours prior to the scheduled performance date.
Tickets to MTC Summer Series can be exchanged for any other Summer Series productions, subject to availability. Subscribers have the benefit to exchange tickets in their package to another production, subject to availability (conditions apply). Please note that there will be no subscriptions available for MTC 2021 - Act 1.
The following fees apply to ticket exchanges in 2021.
- MTC Summer Series tickets: $5 per ticket
- Full Season Subscriber tickets: free
- All other Subscription tickets including additional tickets: $5 per ticket
- Non-Subscription tickets: $18 per ticket
No fees apply to cancelled performance exchanges, or exchanges due to COVID-19. Please see our FAQ for more information about changes we've made to our policies and procedures.
Exchange tickets online
Subject to availability, tickets for MTC Summer Series productions can be exchanged into any other performance in MTC Summer Series using our online ticket exchange functionality.
If you need to exchange your MTC Summer Series ticket into a different production in the season within one week of that production, please call our Box Office for assistance on (03) 8688 0800, Monday to Thursday 10am - 5pm.
Tickets to mainstage productions in the Sumner Theatre can be exchanged using our online ticket exchange functionality. To exchange tickets to a production at Arts Centre Melbourne, please contact our ticketing office at email@example.com to arrange tickets for an alternative performance. We also provide a Free Up Seat function, which allows you to offer your seats back to MTC, if you find that you cannot attend a performance.
Exchange tickets in person or by mail
In light of the current COVID-19 situation and in the interest of the health and safety of our audiences, the Southbank Theatre Box Office is currently closed to the public. As such, we are currently not able to process exchanges in person.
Ticket exchanges can still be performed by mailing your tickets together with details of your preferred new performance and the appropriate exchange fees to:

How can I exchange my tickets?
Subject to availability, exchanges for MTC Summer Series tickets can be made online on our website, via phone, or by mail to 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank VIC 3006.
Exchanges for Mainstage MTC productions are possible from public on sale dates, subject to availability, and can be made online for performances at Southbank Theatre, via phone for performances at Arts Centre Melbourne, or by mail to 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank VIC 3006. It is not possible to exchange MTC tickets at the Arts Centre Melbourne Box Office.
Can I exchange for a different date?
When exchanging into a different performance date of the same production, tickets need to be received by MTC at least 24 hours prior to the performance date indicated on the ticket.
Can I exchange for a different production?
Subscribers can exchange into another production within the same season, provided the exchange is into a production that is not already booked within the subscription package, and the exchange occurs at least one week before the first preview of the originally booked production.
Website says my ticket is not valid for exchange.
At present, online exchanges are only available for performances at Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, and tickets must be exchanged at least 24 hours before the performance start time.
If you wish to exchange tickets for performances at Arts Centre Melbourne, or in The Lawler, you will need to contact the Southbank Theatre Box Office, or post your tickets back to us (see below).
If it is now less than 24 hours before your scheduled performance, you will not be able to exchange your tickets – but you can Free Up Seat to allow others to enjoy the performance if you cannot attend (see below). If you have become unwell prior to a performance, please call our Southbank Theatre Box Office on 03 8688 0800. We will be available to assist you up to one hour prior to your scheduled performance.
Why can’t I exchange my tickets to an ACM show?
Online ticket exchanges are only available for productions in the Sumner. This service is available due to the access control system that is in place at Southbank Theatre, The Sumner and unfortunately this service does not currently exist at Arts Centre Melbourne.
But you can still exchange your tickets to MTC productions in the Playhouse or Fairfax Studio – simply call our Box Office on 03 8688 0800, or post your tickets together with details of your preferred new performance and the appropriate exchange fees to:

What happens to my ticket when I free up my seat?
When you Free Up Seats, you allow us to offer those seats to other theatre lovers who may not have otherwise been able to access the performance. By releasing your tickets to us for resale, you are helping us to fund vital programs including discounted and free tickets to artists, students and the disadvantaged. Please note that Free Up Seats does not result in a refund.
