The last few weeks have been extremely challenging, not least for our 2020 Women in Theatre cohort, who as independent artists and theatre-makers are so reliant on the sector and gig economies.
Despite these circumstances, MTC’s Women in Theatre Program and our 2020 participants remain a significant priority for the Company. We are therefore delighted to confirm that both our mentorships and salon sessions will continue on throughout 2020 and were delivered virtually over Zoom this month. Participants explored collaboration through Creative Pathways, and learned about how a company like MTC operates through MTC Business sessions with department Executives. The group also explored Engagement with our MTC Education team and the development of new Australian writing with our Literary team and NEXT STAGE Writer-in-Residence Elise Esther Hearst.
At this time it’s particularly pleasing that we have also negotiated with mental health and wellbeing expert Gabriel Edwards, to enhance and divide her contribution to the program. Participants are having individual one-on-one sessions with Gabriel this month, and will regroup face-to-face in October to further explore how to positively manage careers and workplace environments.
To remain connected and support the development of this group in these times apart, we have also added an additional session in June over Zoom, with director Sam Strong. Exploring Creative Leadership, Sam will share his extensive knowledge and experience around developing people, building culture, cultivating success and transcending failure.
We intend to extend invitations to several opening nights into 2021 for this group of Women in Theatre – to compensate for the productions and networking opportunities they will have missed due to the COVID-19 shutdown this year.
Unfortunately our Technical Design Stream will need to be postponed this year, as without the shows, our two TDS participants will not have productions to work on. These placements will however be offered again when we reschedule our lost 2020 shows to next year’s season.
