About the Event

For more than 70 years Melbourne Theatre Company has been at the forefront of developing new Australian plays, presenting stories that challenge the boundaries of theatre making and fuel the cultural conversation.

This year writers Patricia Cornelius (My Sister Jill) and Declan Furber Gillick (Jacky) brought brilliant, urgent new plays to the stage and we invite you to join us for an enlivening conversation about the uniqueness of Australian plays and playwriting. Delving in to the risk, relevance and inspiration of writing for theatre, this event promises to be a rich discussion from two celebrated voices.

Patricia Cornelius

Patricia Cornelius is a founding member of Melbourne Workers Theatre. She’s a playwright, novelist and film writer. Patricia is excited this play My Sister Jill (adapted from her own novel) is receiving its premiere production at Melbourne Theatre Company. She’s written over 35 plays including the adaptation of The House of Bernarda Alba and SHIT (Melbourne Theatre Company); Do Not Go Gentle (Sydney Theatre Company, first produced by fortyfivedownstairs); RUNT, SLUT (fortyfivedownstairs); In the Club (State Theatre Company South Australia) and LOVE (HotHouse/Malthouse Theatre). Her film credits include SHIT (adapted from the stage play) and BLESSED (co-writer). She’s currently developing a feature film, with director and co-writer Catriona McKenzie. Patricia is the recipient of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize and the 2019 Green Room Award for Life Achievement. She’s been awarded the Vic, NSW, Qld Premier Prizes, the Patrick White Fellowship and Mona Brand Award for playwriting as well as numerous AWGIE Awards.

Declan Furber Gillick

Declan Furber Gillick is an Arrernte writer and multidisciplinary artist from Mparntwe (Alice Springs). His practice spans theatre, television, poetry, music, rap and visual arts. Declan also works as a community organiser, mentor and educator. Jacky is Declan’s Melbourne Theatre Company debut. Other credits include Scar Trees (Ilbijerri Theatre Company) and Bighouse Dreaming (Melbourne Fringe Festival). He is currently working on an adaptation of Melissa Lucashenko’s novel Too Much Lip for television. Bighouse Dreaming was awarded the Green Room Award for Best Independent Writing and Best Ensemble, Melbourne Fringe Awards for Best Performance Work, Best Writing, Melbourne Festival Discovery Award and Best Emerging Indigenous Artist. In 2018 Declan took up a residency as part of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Next Stage Writers’ Program. He has also worked with Melbourne Theatre Company’s First Peoples Young Artist Program. He completed a Masters of Writing for Performance at The Victorian College of The Arts (VCA) in 2017.
