The Mountaintop

Dr Martin Luther King Jr has stood high upon the mountaintop and he’s seen the Promised Land. But on this rainy night in 1968 he mostly feels footsore, weary and sick at heart. From his shabby room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, the Promised Land seems as far away as ever. He calls down for room service and a maid arrives with coffee – and an unexpected message. Is it a message from the past or the future?

Katori Hall’s inspired and inspiring play was a sell-out on West End and Broadway stages. It tracks not only one long night in American history but, in an astonishing finale, hurtles us through forty-five years of civil rights into the twenty-first century.

After making his directorial stage debut with MTC’s acclaimed production of Red, Alkinos Tsilimidos returns in 2013 to direct this Australian premiere.
