What a year! 2013 was the first year under the direction of our new team – Artistic Director Brett Sheehy and Executive Director Virginia Lovett – bringing a fresh perspective to the Company and lots of exciting ideas.
2013 saw a lot of firsts, such as the inaugural NEON Festival of Independent Theatre, programming a vacant Zeitgeist slot to to allow space for a hot, new work (which was later filled by Eddie Perfect’s first play, The Beast), presenting our first family show in a decade (The Book of Everything), co-presenting our first international production (One Man, Two Guvnors), establishing MTC Connect – MTC’s multicultural outreach program – as well as a new Women Directors Program.
With so much activity on the calendar, the teams at both MTC HQ and Southbank Theatre have been super busy – so you can imagine how thrilled we are to announce that our 2013 season has achieved the highest box office sales in our 60 year history, as well as the highest number of single ticket (non-subscription) sales in ten years. We have particularly enjoyed seeing so many new faces in the theatre this year – nearly 33% of the single ticket buyers were first time MTC visitors, and interstate visitors increased by 10% during Rupert. If you were one of the new faces in 2013, we hope you enjoyed your experience and look forward to seeing you again soon!
But it doesn’t stop there – 2014 is shaping up to be another big year with a diverse mainstage line-up, the second NEON Festival of Independent Theatre, and the US tour of David Williamson’s Rupert – our first international tour in 30 years – and much more. We look forward to sharing all the details with you here on the blog.
And stay tuned next week as we look at more highlights and behind-the-scenes secrets from 2013.
