Great Australian Speeches

Introduction with Petra Kalive

We kick off our new series of audio dramas, MTC Audio Lab, with Great Australian Speeches.

We kick off our new series of audio dramas, MTC Audio Lab, with Great Australian Speeches, comprising speeches, texts and poems designed for spoken performance.

From political leaders to leading Indigenous voices, from outlaw folk heroes to iconic artists, these speeches reveal the direct and powerful impact our words have on the world.

Curated and directed by MTC Associate Director Petra Kalive, the collection explores speeches, texts and poems designed for spoken performance from the 1800s to today, and features performances from Shareena ClantonMark Coles SmithMarg Downey, Greg StoneLeonie Whyman and Izabella Yena.

In this introductory episode, Petra Kalive introduces the series alongside previews of the speeches she has curated.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this recording contains names and words of deceased persons.

Thank you for tuning into MTC Audio Lab. You can hear more episodes from this series here.

While we're offstage, we begin this new initiative by experimenting with non-fiction texts and poetry in Great Australian Speeches, recreating chilling ghost stories in a dramatic reading of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, and will be exploring audio plays when we can return to the studio.
