Vivian Boyce shares the story behind her seat dedication in the Sumner Theatre.

As you next take your seat in the Sumner Theatre, take a look around at the small silver plaques adorning the backs of so many seats. The stories they tell are remarkable; tales of love, laughter, and the profound connection we share with the stage.

One recent seat dedication was made by Vivian Boyce. After three decades attending Melbourne Theatre Company productions, Vivian remarked that she was always impressed by the standard of plays, set designs and the dedication of the actors on stage.

Reflecting on her experiences, she spoke of the unparalleled sense of wonder that washes over her during each performance. It's a sentiment that resonates deeply with anyone who has ever been captivated by the stage.

‘My overwhelming sense when pondering Melbourne Theatre Company is an almost unexplainable feeling I get during a performance. A total immersion, being mesmerised in fact. It’s not a feeling that can be replicated anywhere else. It’s a truly special place.’

For Vivian, dedicating a seat was more than just a gesture of support; it was a heartfelt tribute to the countless hours of enchantment she has experienced as an audience member. And, of course, the added delight of seeing her name shine in the spotlight was an irresistible bonus.

‘I decided to make a seat dedication because I felt I needed to support the theatre for all the spellbinding moments that I’ve enjoyed.  Plus, if I’m truly honest who doesn’t want to see their name on one of those small silver plaques? What a thrill!’
