Southbank Theatre


Southbank Theatre is the principal home of Melbourne Theatre Company, hosting the annual season of up to 12 plays, as well as NEON NEXT, the Cybec Electric play readings series and Education performances and other productions for families and young people.

Designed by the multi-award winning ARM Architecture, the Theatre opened in 2009 and contains two performance spaces: the 500-559 seat Sumner, and the 150 seat Lawler. The Theatre also houses Script Bar & Bistro, Function Rooms and Foyers, two Foyer Bars and extensive backstage facilities.

How To Get Here

Southbank Theatre is within 10 minutes walking distance of Flinders Street Station – simply head south down St Kilda Road past Arts Centre Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria, and turn right down Southbank Boulevard. The Theatre, with its distinctive white piping, cannot be missed.

The theatre is also easily accessible by tram, via Route 1 to South Melbourne Beach (which stops directly in front of Southbank Theatre), and all other trams that pass down St Kilda Road (simply alight at the Arts Centre Melbourne stop and walk to the theatre).

Conveniently located adjacent to the Theatre building is Script Bar and Bistro, perfect for your pre-and post-show dining. Script encompasses a sophisticated bistro, a fully stocked bar with a superb wine list and an enclosed terrace that is sun-filled during the day and looks out on the sparkling lights of the city skyline at night. Script has a predominantly Italian-style menu and uses seasonal produce to create fresh and exciting dishes showcasing the best Victoria has to offer. Located in the Melbourne Recital Centre building (just next to Southbank Theatre), Blondie offers an exciting menu inspired by Asian cuisine, along with an interesting mix of Australian and European wines, carefully selected craft beer, and perfectly constructed cocktails. Southbank Theatre Foyer Bars

Opening 90 minutes prior to performances, the Southbank Theatre Foyer Bars offer a selection of wines, beers, cider, soft drinks, confectionery, snacks and tea and coffee. As much as possible, we stock wines and beers from Victorian vineyards and local boutique breweries.

Together with Script Bar & Bistro, Southbank Theatre’s Tonks Bar (Level 1) offers a selected menu for pre-show dining. Pre-show dining orders are available until 45 mins prior to your performance.

Southbank Theatre is ideally located just five minutes from the Southgate complex on the Yarra River and is only a ten minute stroll from the Melbourne CBD. Wheelchair and mobility access

Facilities for wheelchair access and seating that allows more room for the use of mobility aids are available in all theatres. Please make your requirements known when booking.

Captioning and FM hearing system

An FM hearing system is available for all performances in the Sumner, Playhouse and Fairfax Studio at no charge upon presentation of identification to theatre ushers. Audience members receive either a headset or neck loop enabling use of a hearing aid via the T-switch.

Companion Cards

MTC offers Companion Card holders a free ticket for their companion to attend the performance and assist with their access needs.
