The MTC Youth Ambassador program offers 15 enthusiastic Year 11 Drama students unique, up-close exposure to the inner workings of a professional theatre company. The program challenges and inspires students with opportunities not available at school. Throughout the year-long program, Youth Ambassadors engage in seminars with actors, directors and performing arts industry professionals to gain an insight into potential future careers. They also attend and critique an array of MTC shows with a select group of peers who are just as passionate about theatre as they are.

The Ambassador program is supported by The Youth Ambassador Giving Circle, spearheaded by Lorrane Shwartz, the Giving Circle was introduced in 2015. As a teacher of English and Literature with over 50 years’ experience, Lorrane understands how important it is to provide opportunities for students with a passion and talent for theatre. Lorrane found that “the MTC Youth Ambassador Program recognises the need for outstanding, passionate students of Drama to be extended beyond what’s possible at school in order to reach their full potential.”

The Youth Ambassadors begin meeting in late April and activities continue until the end of the year. Supporters in the Youth Ambassador Giving Circle have opportunities to meet the students and attend performances and workshops with the Ambassadors throughout the year. Having this support and experience can often make the difference in helping a young person follow their dreams.

2015 Youth Ambassador Gemma said the best part of the program was “meeting all of the people and by that I really do mean them all. From the Ambassadors to the industry guests who visited us every meeting. I’ve gained strong friendships with all the Ambassadors and it really feels like that theatre family. The guests who visited us really helped set in perspective what it’s like working in the industry and how they got there. I particularly liked meeting Sam Strong as he is a director and I aspire to be a director as my career.” For Nesceda, another 2015 Youth Ambassador, “being part of this program has shown me already that there is such a colourful, innovative world in the theatre, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

With the Youth Ambassador program now in its sixth year, participants in the program have gone on to become professionals in the field, demonstrating the life changing impact that this program has on its participants. Kaytlin Petrarca participated in the program in 2010 as one of the inaugural MTC Youth Ambassadors. She told us that “being a part of the MTC Ambassador program opened my eyes to a whole new world behind the scenes in theatre. Coming into the program I was an aspiring performer but as an Ambassador, I was exposed to various roles and developed an interest in the world of Stage Management. Now I have completed my studies at the VCA studying Stage Management and am working as an Assistant Stage Manager on Georgy Girl – The Seekers Musical. The Ambassador Program helped me believe that I have a great deal to offer as a young aspiring individual, and the confidence to try new things.”

We are currently looking for further support in order to sustain this wonderful program. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Youth Ambassador Giving Circle please contact Chris Walters, Annual Giving Manager, on 03 8688 0938 or
