Our annual lunch in April for the Women in Theatre Giving Circle is one of the highlights of MTC Foundation’s calendar of fundraising events.
Established in 2016, the Giving Circle is an essential part of MTC’s Women in Theatre program – bringing together generous supporters who share our commitment to addressing the gender imbalance in the theatre industry.
In fact, without their vital support the program would simply not exist.
Women in Theatre is an industry-leading initiative that assists in creating practical pathways for women pursuing careers in a range of disciplines from production to artistic and executive management. Investment is needed in women working across all roles to create new creative voices.
Now in its fifth year, Melbourne Theatre Company’s Women in Theatre program has supported and mentored 45 theatre professionals to date. In 2018, the 12-month program includes participants working in education and scenic art for the first time. Meet this year’s participants.
Many of the program’s alumnae have gone on to direct on our stages, hold leadership positions at theatre companies around the country, taken on further professional development, toured nationally and internationally, and presented new works locally.
Change is happening but there is still a long way to go to see true gender parity in the industry, particularly in technical creative roles.
‘Right now, the world is imperfect. And we need to address things systemically and systematically. A program like this, while not the answer to everything, says clearly to the community:
We are open to change
We are open to conversation
We are open, in fact, to critique
And they are the starting point for other, bigger, deeper changes and shifts in whose voices we hear, whose stories are told and moving towards a genuine multiplicity of voice, vision and imagining.’
~ Emilie Collyer, Women in Theatre Alumna
