ABOUT THE SHOW

A gifted cast of actor-musicians, including Geraldine Hakewill (Miss Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries) and Alex Malone (The Royal Hotel), catapults to California in the mid-1970s in this Broadway hit.

A band on the verge of a breakthrough retreats to a recording studio to make the rock’n’roll album that could define a generation. But ambition comes at a cost: cocaine, egos, rivalry and fractured relationships all threaten to destroy the very thing they're trying to create. Over weeks that blur into months, they chase the perfect take – and each other.

David Adjmi wrote this ‘epic canvas rendered in hyper-intimate detail’ (The New York Times) over a decade, and the now critically acclaimed fly-on-the-wall portrait of creativity and obsession is the most-nominated play in Tony Award history, going on to win five. An ensemble cast blows the lid off the recording studio with an original score by Grammy-Award winning musician Will Butler, formerly of indie rock giants Arcade Fire.

After winning hearts in London and New York, director Daniel Evans leads Melbourne’s turn at this live musical experience about the soaring highs and spiralling lows of pursuing greatness.
