ABOUT THE SHOW

Sybylla Melvyn is finding her voice.

Growing up in the 90s – the 1890s, that is – life doesn’t throw a lot of options at a girl. But life didn’t reckon on Sybylla. Forced to choose between romance and her own genius, her family and a future she defines, she’s decided she’s having it all.

Miles Franklin’s novel My Brilliant Career gets a bold new makeover that transforms one of the most enduring literary figures into a musical heroine for this very moment, with a live soundtrack that’s equal parts contemporary pop, folksy bush band and raucous pub rock. An adaptation with edge, this re-imagining captures the playful and effervescent spirit of a young woman ready to take on the world.

A live theatre experience sure to blow the ceiling off, My Brilliant Career is led by the phenomenal Kala Gare (SIX) with an ensemble cast of actor/musicians including Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward, Lincoln Elliot, Victoria Falconer, Raj Labade, Drew Livingston, HaNy Lee, Ana Mitsikas, Christina O'Neill and Jarrad Payne. The fresh take on a literary classic has been adapted by music theatre’s beloved Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank alongside Sheridan Harbridge, directed by our own Artistic Director Anne-Louise Sarks with Set & Costumes by Olivier award-winning Marg Horwell.

Lincoln is a NIDA Musical Theatre graduate and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Dubbo, Lincoln is proudly of Wiradjuri heritage. Lincoln joined the national tour of Sunshine Super Girl (Melbourne Theatre Company/State Theatre Company South Australia/Performing Lines), earning a Green Room Award nomination for Best Ensemble. Most recently, Lincoln travelled to New York to perform in the development of Picnic at Hanging Rock and played Mischa in the Australian premiere of Ride the Cyclone (Hayes Theatre Co). Other theatre credits include The Dismissal, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (Squabbalogic); Misery Loves Company (Legit Theatre Co.); The Hello Girls (Hayes Theatre Co/Heartstrings); If/Then (Hayes Theatre Co./Neglected Musicals); Chimerica (Sydney Theatre Company); 3 Weeks in Spring (State Theatre/Endymion); Ugly Love (Acoustic Theatre); Ordinary Days (Alter Ego); On screen his credits include lead roles in The Choice (Tiny Productions) and Flat-Packed (Galactic Salmon).

Victoria Falconer (she/her) is a multidisciplinary creative, performer and mentor of Filipina-English heritage. She is co-Artistic Director of Hayes Theatre Co in Sydney alongside Richard Carroll. Recent commissioned works include Smashed: The Nightcap (Sydney Festival 2024); The Sight (Dark Mofo 2023); The Vali Myers Project (Adelaide Cabaret Festival, 2022 Frank Ford Award winner). As a cabaret artist, Victoria has performed on stages including Soho Theatre, Southbank Centre London, Club Cumming NYC and Glastonbury. She has also hosted at Victoria’s Pride, Sydney WorldPride and Bi Pride UK. Her recent work as a musical director includes In The Heights (Sydney Opera House); Ride The Cyclone (Hayes) and Once (Darlinghurst Theatre). Victoria has received two Adelaide Fringe Best Cabaret Awards, two Green Room Awards and two Sydney Theatre Award nominations. In 2024 she was named among the 40 Under 40 Influential Asian-Australians in Arts and Culture.

My Brilliant Career will be Kala’s debut with Melbourne Theatre Company. Her other theatre credits include: Masterclass (AKA Productions); Rent (James Terry Collective); Twelfth Night (Melbourne Shakespeare Company); Thoroughly Modern Millie (The Production Company); Bright Star (Pursued By Bear); SIX (Louise Withers, Michael Coppel and Linda Bewick); Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (Darlinghurst Theatre Company); Murder for Two: Christmas Edition (Hayes Theatre Co). Graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2017, Kala more recently studied at The Atlantic Acting School in New York.   Kala is also a singer/songwriter and has performed solo shows of her original work to sell out audiences around Australia. Her music is available to stream on Spotify. Kala is proudly represented by Mark Gogoll Artists.

Raj will star as Sebastian in the highly anticipated Amazon Prime series, The Office: Australia.  His theatre credits include Dictionary of Lost Words (Sydney Theatre Company/State Theatre); Sex Magick (Griffin Theatre); Tell Me I’m Here (Belvoir); Never Closer (Belvoir 22a); Mary Stuart (Performing Lines). His screen credits include Appetite (SBS) and feature film Back of the Net (Netflix). Raj is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), where he was the recipient of multiple prestigious awards: the 2020 Speech and Drama Teachers Association Poetry Prize, the 2021 Vice Chancellor’s Shakespeare Award of Best Production for his performance of Hamlet and the Leslie Anderson Award for Best Graduating Actor in his final showcase performance. In 2023, Raj was named one of the Casting Guild of Australia’s Rising Stars.

Since graduating from WAAPA in 2010 in Acting, Drew has achieved an extensive list of theatre credits throughout his career, including performing in multiple productions with the critically acclaimed Sport for Jove Theatre Company. Most recently, Drew performed in the world premiere of Zombie! The Musical. He also starred in the Australian production of Mamma Mia! in 2023, playing the role of Harry. Selected theatre credits include: Bank Manager in Once (Darlinghurst Theatre Company), Rick Simpkins in The Deb (ATYP); Tony in the 10th anniversary production of Billy Elliot (Louise Withers and Associates); War Horse (Global Creatures & National Theatre); Taking Steps, Good People (Ensemble Theatre), Bell Shakespeare’s Henry V (for which he also composed the music, earning him a Sydney Theatre Award and Green Room nomination); Under Milk Wood (Sydney Theatre Company). Drew is an accomplished musician and composer and has been a proud MEAA member since 2010.

HaNy Lee is a multi-hyphenate, Australian-born Korean artist credited for her dual talent in the music and acting industry. Lee’s performances in theatre include Hamilton International Tour 2024 and Hamilton NZ & Australia Tour 2023 (Michael Cassel Group); The Ghost Quartet (Antipodes Theatre) and BARE The Musical (Stage Art Productions). HaNy Lee is mostly recognised for her role on Neighbours (Channel Ten/Fremantle Media); The Newsreader S1/S2 (ABC/Werner Film Productions); Harrow (ABC/Hoodlum Entertainment) and Wentworth (Fremantle Australia). Lee made her solo debut in Seoul, South Korea as a K-Pop artist under one of Korea’s biggest music companies MBC Music Korea. Her music can be heard on all music platforms across the world.

Her screen credits include Neighbours, Newton’s Law, Pig’s Breakfast, Good Morning Australia and feature film Undertow. Other film credits include the award-winning short film Miriam, Melograno, Day of Birth, and Love, Tea & Epiphany. In the UK Ana played the recurring role of Maggie Peters in the popular TV series Family Affairs. Musical Director credits include Ladies in Black (Federation University); Menopause the Musical (HIT & SK Entertainment); Motormouth Loves Suckface (La Mama Courthouse); Mrs Prime Minister (Melbourne Cabaret Festival) and workshops of the new Australian musical I Can Jump Puddles (Antipodes Theatre Company). Christina O’Neill

Christina graduated from WAAPA in 2005 and has since carved out a successful stage and screen career. Previous Melbourne Theatre Company credits include Bloom, Vivid White. Most recently she appeared in Hour of the Wolf (Malthouse Theatre). Her musical theatre credits include Girl from the North Country (GWB Entertainment); Calamity Jane (One Eyed Man Productions); Avenue Q (Arts Asia Pacific); Show Boat (The Production Company); Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George (Victorian Opera); Spamalot (Louise Withers and Associates); Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical (Back Row Productions). She is an ensemble member of Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre and has played leading roles in their highly-acclaimed productions including Control, Right Now, The River, Middletown, Belleville, Straight, The Motherf*cker with the Hat. Her screen credits include Neighbours, The Power of the Dream. Christina won a Helpmann Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Avenue Q).

Jarrad is a multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer from Adelaide. He graduated from The Elder Conservatorium of Music in 2005, specialising in jazz drumming. Sheridan Harbridge is an award-winning actor, writer and director, graduating from NIDA in 2006. For Melbourne Theatre Company she has appeared in Meet Me at Dawn, Prima Facie, The Beast, The Speechmaker, North by Northwest. Her first musical Songs for the Fallen won multiple awards including Best Musical at the New York Music Theatre Festival. In 2022 she directed 44 Sex Acts in One Week for Sydney Festival, and the new Australian musical Dubbo Championship Wrestling for the Hayes Theatre, earning a Best Director nomination at the Sydney Theatre Awards. As a member of the Griffin Studio 2016, she developed and directed Nosferatutu. Other theatre acting credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Stop Girl, Calamity Jane, The Sugar House, Girl Asleep, The Dog/The Cat (Belvoir); Kill Climate Deniers, Jump for Jordan (Griffin Theatre Company); Queen Fatima (Sydney Festival); Muriel’s Wedding (Sydney Theatre Company) and Gaybies (Darlinghurst). Recent TV credits include The Twelve (Foxtel) and The Messenger (ABC). She won Best Actress at the Sydney Theatre Awards for her performances in Prima Facie and A Streetcar Named Desire.

Dean is an award-winning writer and director who was Associate Director of Melbourne Theatre Company (2016-2019), where he most recently directed Bloom. His other Melbourne Theatre Company credits include Torch the Place, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lady in the Van, An Ideal Husband, Wild, Vivid White, Born Yesterday, Skylight, I’ll Eat You Last and Next to Normal. He met partner Mathew Frank while studying at WAAPA where they wrote Prodigal, which won a Green Room Award and was produced off-Broadway. Other musicals include Once We Lived Here (Green Room award), Virgins: A Musical Threesome, The Silver Donkey, and songs for Mr & Mrs Murder. Dean created verbatim theatre plays Gaybies and Well, That Happened. Cabaret work includes Christie Whelan-Browne vehicles Show People and Britney Spears: The Cabaret. He wrote and directed the short Rhyme Time. Recent credits as director include Dear Evan Hansen (STC/MCG); La Boheme (Opera Australia); Candide (Victorian Opera); A Little Night Music (Hayes Theatre Co, Sydney Theatre award); Giustino (Pinchgut); Fun Home (Melbourne Theatre Company/STC, Sydney Theatre, Green Room awards), Hubris & Humiliation (STC) and The Normal Heart (STCSA).

Mathew Frank

Mathew is an award-winning composer, sound designer and music director who has worked on numerous Melbourne Theatre Company productions including Fun Home, Lady in the Van, An Ideal Husband, Skylight, Private Lives, The Drowsy Chaperone, Next to Normal, Well…That Happened and for Sydney Theatre Company, Hubris & Humiliation. He met partner Dean Bryant at WAAPA and their first musical, Prodigal, won a Green Room award and was produced off-Broadway. They followed this with Once We Lived Here (Green Room award), Virgins: A Musical Threesome, The Silver Donkey and the songs for Mr & Mrs Murder. He composed the score for short Rhyme Time and created Christie Whelan-Browne vehicles Show People and Britney Spears: The Cabaret. Other credits as music director include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Gordon Frost Organisation); Jerry’s Girls, La Cage Aux Folles and Pirates of Penzance (The Production Company).

Anne-Louise Sarks is Artistic Director & Co-CEO of Melbourne Theatre Company, where her directing credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Escaped Alone and What If If Only and Bernhardt/Hamlet. Previous work with the Company includes Minnie & Liraz and The Seed. An internationally acclaimed director, writer and dramaturg, Anne-Louise’s work has been seen in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Helsinki, Mexico City, New York, Warsaw, Dublin, Auckland, Mumbai, Perth and Basel. Recent productions include Avalanche (Barbican); Our Town, Medea (Theater Basel); Stop Girl (Belvoir). Her production of Blasted at Malthouse Theatre was nominated for four Green Room Awards. Medea, co-written with Kate Mulvany, won five Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Direction. It was also awarded an AWGIE for Best Stage Play. Anne-Louise was previously Artistic Director of the Lyric Ensemble at the Lyric Hammersmith in London and of Melbourne independent theatre company The Hayloft Project. She has been Resident Director at Belvoir, Director in Residence at Malthouse Theatre, and in 2010 she was Emerging Resident Director at Melbourne Theatre Company.

Amy Campbell (she/her) is one of Australia’s most accomplished creative talents with an award-winning career spanning all areas of the entertainment industry. Amy made her directorial debut with A Chorus Line (Darlinghurst Theatre Co and Sydney Opera House). She also created, choreographed and directed the original show LEAP and The Wizard of Oz – in concert (Prospero Arts). Most recently Amy directed Smashed The Nightcap for the Sydney Festival. Amy’s extensive list of choreographic credits include Once (Darlinghurst Theatre Co); In The Heights (Blue Saint Productions/JR Productions); the Australian premiere of Violet, the national tour of HAIR (Sydney Opera House and Peace Productions); Spring Awakening (ATYP); Little Women (JR Productions); Oklahoma (The Production Company); Velvet Rewired Australian Tour and Velvet Hamburg (Collien Konzert & Theatre GmbH). Amy was also the Choreographer/Movement Director for The Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s productions of Funny Girl, Porgy and Bess and co-directed Candide (State Theatre Company South Australia and State Opera South Australia).

Marg Horwell is a multi-award-winning set and costume designer. Matt Scott is an award-winning lighting designer with 30 years’ experience designing for all genres of live performance. He has lit more than sixty Melbourne Theatre Company productions, including Jacky, The Heartbreak Choir, Fun Home, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Shakespeare in Love, Storm Boy, The Lady in the Van, The Architect, An Ideal Husband, Minnie & Liraz, Born Yesterday, The Odd Couple, Jasper Jones, Skylight, The Last Man Standing, The Weir, Jumpy, The Mountaintop, Elling, His Girl Friday, Red ,The Seed, Tribes, Clybourne Park, Next to Normal, Blackbird and August: Osage County. Other recent credits include Dear Evan Hansen (Sydney Theatre Company); Medea, Drizzle Boy (Queensland Theatre); Candide, The Who’s Tommy (Victorian Opera). Matt has received and been nominated for numerous awards, including a Sydney Theatre Award, a Green Room Award and two Helpmann Awards. He is also currently a Lecturer in Production (Lighting Design) at the University of Melbourne (VCA).

James Simpson

James Simpson

Orchestrator / Vocal Arranger

James has worked around Australia and internationally as a musical director, arranger and orchestrator. Previously for Melbourne Theatre Company he was the musical director and orchestrator for Vivid White. Other credits include the Australian tours of Chicago (musical director); 9 to 5 (musical director); Moulin Rouge! (associate musical director); Disney’s Aladdin (associate musical director) and Disney’s The Lion King (assistant musical director). He was the orchestrator for Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank’s Virgins: A Musical Threesome (Echelon Productions – Malthouse Theatre, New York Musical Theatre Festival, Regional Arts Victoria tour). Whilst based in the UK, he was the musical director for the world premiere of Thérèse Raquin (Park Theatre), as well as contributing additional orchestrations and vocal arrangements. James graduated with Distinction from the Masters of Musical Theatre (Musical Directing) programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow.

Sound Designer

Joy is the sound supervisor at the Southbank Theatre and has worked on over 60 productions for Melbourne Theatre Company over the past nine years.  For the company, she has mix engineered and supervised musical productions such as Bloom, Fun Home, Come Rain or Come Shine, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Twelfth Night, As You Like it and Vivid White. She recently co-sound designed Bananaland by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall (Brisbane Festival). Miranda Middleton is an award-winning director, writer, and choreographer with a Master of Fine Arts (Directing) from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). A 2022 MinterEllison Future Director at Melbourne Theatre Company, she has also been Assistant Director on Come Rain or Come Shine. Miranda’s most recent theatre directing credits include The Grinning Man (VASS Productions/Salty Theatre); The Eisteddfod (Old Fitz Theatre); Pear-Shaped, Lemon Tree on Dreg Street, SENSER (Theatre Works), Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody’ (Salty Theatre); Not Today (Seymour Centre). Her assistant director credits include The Lovers (Bell Shakespeare); Master Class, The Queen’s Nanny (Ensemble Theatre); Little Women (Josh Robson Productions). In 2023, Miranda was the Resident Writer at Theatre Works, and in 2024, she is the recipient of the Sandra Bates Director’s Award at the Ensemble Theatre. She has two new musicals in development: Paper Stars and Silver Tongue.

Since graduating from WAAPA in 2010 in Acting, Drew has achieved an extensive list of theatre credits throughout his career, including performing in multiple productions with the critically acclaimed Sport for Jove Theatre Company. Most recently, Drew performed in the world premiere of Zombie! The Musical. He also starred in the Australian production of Mamma Mia! in 2023, playing the role of Harry. Selected theatre credits include: Bank Manager in Once (Darlinghurst Theatre Company), Rick Simpkins in The Deb (ATYP); Tony in the 10th anniversary production of Billy Elliot (Louise Withers and Associates); War Horse (Global Creatures & National Theatre); Taking Steps, Good People (Ensemble Theatre), Bell Shakespeare’s Henry V (for which he also composed the music, earning him a Sydney Theatre Award and Green Room nomination); Under Milk Wood (Sydney Theatre Company). Drew is an accomplished musician and composer and has been a proud MEAA member since 2010.

Savanna Wegman is a set and costume designer, maker and writer of Chinese Malaysian and Dutch descent, born in New Zealand and now based on unceded Wurundjeri land in Naarm/Melbourne. She is a part of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Future Creatives initiative. Recent design credits include Set & Costume Design for The Last Train to Madeline, Climbers, Brittany and The Mannequins (Fever103 Theatre); Biographica (Lyric Opera); STAUNCH ASF (Amelia Jean O’Leary, Melbourne Fringe); and Set Design for A Certain Mumble (Amelia Jean O’Leary, Darebin Arts Speakeasy). Savanna has been an Associate Designer for Dann Barber on productions Candide (Victorian Opera); Far Away (Patalog Theatre); The Crocodile (Spinning Plates Co.); The Dream Laboratory (Essential Theatre) and The Mermaid (La Mama). Savanna studied at Monash University’s Centre for Theatre and Performance. Her designs for Biographica and Brittany and the Mannequins have earned her two Green Room Award nominations.
