NEON 2013’s From Page to Stage returns!

Using MTC’s 2014 production of Glengarry Glen Ross as an example, explore the roles each department plays in staging a mainstage production from the moment it is programmed to the opening night performance.

Having studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, Production School, Martina began her professional career in Stage Management, and has worked within the Stage Management and Production Management teams of over 30 productions for various companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre (Playbox), Not Yet It’s Difficult, Stuck Pigs Squealing, Hothouse, The Victorian Opera and most regularly Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC), with many productions touring nationally.

Having covered administration roles on short term contracts for companies such as Malthouse Theatre, in 2008 Martina left Stage Management to take up the position of MTC’s Artistic Administrator which began her transition into administration and producing. Whilst Artistic Administrator, Martina lent her spare hours to be Assistant to Simon Phillips on various commercial musicals Nationally and Internationally, including Love Never Dies and Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical.

In 2012, with the appointment of Brett Sheehy, Martina joined the MTC Artistic Team as Associate Producer, which led to her current role as Producer. In this role, Martina works across the main stage season and the companies ancillary activities, which includes her role as the founding Managing Producer of NEON, MTC’s Festival of Independent Theatre.

Outside of the Major Performing Arts sector, the last decade has seen Martina be be an active member of various Independent Theatre Companies, most recently as Executive Producer for for the multi award winning independent company The Hayloft Project.

Having completed a Bachelor of Dramatic Art (Production) at VCA in 2003, Michaela’s freelance career has included: Regional touring with The Australian Ballet’s Dancer’s Company (ASM 2003 & 2005, and Stage Manager 2006-2008), Stage Manager and then Production Manager for VCA’s School of Drama, Production Manager for International Youth Percussion Masterclass and World Percussion Spectacular presented by Festival Melbourne 2006 (Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival) and Production/Event Manager for Malcolm Cooke and Associates including Harp on the Willow at the Comedy Theatre. Michaela has also been a Production/Stage Manager for various Independent Theatre productions including An Oration of Filth (Self-Saucing Pudding) and Personality Games (Michael Bishop/Neil Cole) both at La Mama’s Carlton Courthouse.

At Melbourne Theatre Company, Michaela has worn many hats. Between 2004-2007 Michaela was the Event/Stage Manager for various fundraising events and season launches, and Stage Manager for MTC Education productions including A Man for All Seasons and Bombshells. From September 2008 to early 2010 Michaela was the Production Administrator assisting with the transition into our own Southbank Theatre and new Headquarters. 2010-2011 saw Michaela return to Stage Management as ASM for Simon Phillips’ Richard III and Stage Manager for Apologia and premier season of Songs for Nobodies. Since 2011, Michaela has fulfilled the role of Production Coordinator working across MTC’s main stage, Lawler seasons, Education productions, and was the Production Manager for MTC’s inaugural Neon Festival of Independent Theatre.
