Women in Theatre 2019: Inside Week 1

Since 2014, MTC’s Women in Theatre Program has given over 50 participants the opportunity to engage with the inner workings of a major state theatre company, over the course of a 12 month professional and personal development program.

Women in Theatre 2019 kicked off on Monday 11 February, as this year’s 13 core participants were welcomed to MTC’s Headquarters.

Their first session involved participants sharing their past and current work experiences through short presentations prepared individually prior to the day, and getting to know each other. This session was followed by a profile management and networking session hosted by MTC Executive Director & Co-CEO Virginia Lovett, in which participants were given insight into her career and networking advice for building a professional profile.

On day two of the three day intensive, the cohort were introduced to Southbank Theatre by MTC Producer Martina Murray, who explained the inner workings of MTC and its position within the industry. Artistic Director Brett Sheehy AO then discussed the challenges of programming for a major company, including what draws him to a particular story, and advice to those wishing to work on the main stages.

Finally, participants were involved in a day-long Fearless Leadership Session run by Leadership Coach Corrinne Armour, on day three. This session offered the participants a chance to reflect on their personal leadership styles and assisted them in the development of personal authority and communication skills.

With the first of three intensive weeks throughout the year successfully completed, participants were given a taste of the array of incredible opportunities provided by the program. From access to exclusive performances, to one-on-one mentoring from a practitioner of their chosen discipline, the program allows participants to gain further insight into the sector and develop as creative professionals.

In response to the ever changing needs of the sector, MTC also introduced a new Technical Design stream to the 2019 program, offering two further participants paid design associate placements on MTC 2019 productions.

MTC’s Women in Theatre program has been made possible by the generosity of our Women in Theatre Giving Circle Donors since 2016. If you would like to learn more about how you can support the MTC Women in Theatre Program, please contact Major Gifts Manager, Sophie Boardley, 03 8688 0959 or via email on s.boardley@mtc.com.au.
