Catherine McClements tells us about her upcoming role as Tess in Joanna Murray-Smith’s new play Three Little Words.
What are you most looking forward to about playing Tess?
I love Joanna Murray Smith’s command of language in her writing. It is challenging and exhilarating as an actor to tackle it. The characters have a heightened quality, they are laughed at, laughed with and in this play can be terribly cruel. I’m looking forward to jumping into this dangerous world with my fellow actors.
What is at the heart of Three Little Words?
I think at the heart of Three Little Words is: what are we entitled to? Is happiness an entitlement? Do we have a duty to ourselves to change, explore and challenge even when it is painful and potentially destructive to our perfectly good lives and loved ones?
Why do you think theatre is a powerful medium?
I find performing live like riding a wild creature. The play is the outward form but somehow the audience is its living breathing centre. It always feels slightly dangerous, requires focus and as much sensitivity as you were born with.
