In Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer and Cellar, a young, out-of-work actor finds himself working in Barbra Streisand’s basement mall. The story may be fictional, but the basement mall is real – it’s located in the barn on Barbra’s sprawling Malibu property, and was detailed in her 2010 book My Passion For Design.
In the interactive timeline below, we follow the incredible early years of Barbra’s career, from her first audition for MGM aged 9 years to her first professional engagement in New York; from starring in films and receiving accolades galore, to buying the home that would become the setting for Buyer and Cellar.
