Melbourne Theatre Company is deeply saddened by the news that Betty Amsden AO passed away over the weekend.
Betty was a wonderful philanthropic leader in the arts community and major donor to MTC and many other organisations in Victoria. Among her extensive philanthropic endeavours, Betty supported MTC’s Betty Amsden Youth Scholarship Course, which was named in her honour at the beginning of this year.
MTC Executive Director Virginia Lovett said, ‘Betty was an incredibly vital, generous and passionate advocate for the arts and a true inspiration to us all. Her legacy will live on and benefit generations to come thanks to her visionary investment in cultural programs and organisations in Victoria. It is with great sadness that we farewell our friend, but we look forward to keeping Betty’s spirit alive with key programs for young people across the State.’
For over 30 years Betty was a highly active leader, mentor and donor in the community and made an extraordinary impact on changing attitudes about private support for the arts, particularly in the fields of education and access. Betty’s generosity touched the lives of so many, not only through her giving programs, scholarships and private donations, but through the time, skills and knowledge she contributed as a board member and mentor throughout her life.
