What is on-stage seating?
On-stage seating means you’ll be sitting directly on the stage, in close proximity to the actors and the action of the play. You’ll experience the performance from a unique and intimate perspective, making you feel like a part of the story. The on-stage seating bank is visible to the audience sitting in the Sumner auditorium.
Why is on-stage seating part of the production?
The on-stage seating is a deliberate design choice to place you close to the action, so you see and feel the dynamics of power and authority of the characters unfold right in front of you. It aims to heighten the impact of the play, while also allowing you to face other members of the audience in this shared experience to heighten the theatricality.
What does the on-stage seating look like?
The on-stage seating bank consists of four rows of tiered plastic seats facing the auditorium. The top rows are accessible via stairs on the seating bank. You will enter from Door 3 and access the seats via the stage.
How accessible is the on-stage seating?
Entrance to the front row (row AA) is accessible via level access from Door 3, with a wheelchair space also available. Please be advised Rows BB-DD of the on-stage seating bank are accessible via stairs only.
Will I be safe sitting on stage?
Yes, your safety is our top priority. The staging and seating arrangements have been carefully designed to ensure your comfort and safety. You should be aware that the on-stage seating provides an up-close view of The Removalists which is likely to heighten the intensity of the raw energy, gripping tension and physicality of the production
How do I access the on-stage seats?
You will enter the theatre from Door 3 and be directed to the on-stage seating bank via the stage. An usher will be on hand to assist you.
Can I leave my on-stage seat during the show?
Once seated, we ask that you remain in your seat. However, should you need to leave during the performance, the exit will be via the stage. An usher will be on hand to assist. Please note, to avoid interrupting the performance, late re-entries will not be able to return to their original on-stage seat.
Will I be required to participate in the performance?
No, there is no audience participation involved in this production and actors will not engage with you directly.
Will I be able to see other audience members?
Yes, sitting on stage allows you to see other audience members in the theatre.
Why is Melbourne Theatre Company contributing funds from on-stage seat tickets to La Mama?
To acknowledge La Mama's ongoing contribution to the independent theatre scene in Melbourne and its influential role presenting the premiere season of The Removalists in 1971.
