My work experience week

Year 11 student Daisy Saunder travelled from Bendigo to complete a work experience placement in the rehearsal room.

In her application for our work experience program, Daisy said 'I want real exposure to the different areas that make a production come alive.' Here, she reflects on her week in the rehearsal room for Shoelace Chaser by Madelaine Nunn, our 2026 Education Production that will tour to Daisy's hometown of Bendigo.

I’ve always been interested in careers that combine creativity with organisation, particularly roles like tour management and creative direction for musicians. At the same time, I’ve had a long-standing interest in theatre and wanted to better understand how the industry operates behind the scenes. When I came across the opportunity through the Melbourne Theatre Company website, it felt like a practical way to explore both of these interests. I was especially curious about how productions are developed from early ideas through to performance, and what kinds of roles contribute to that process. This placement gave me the chance to observe a professional environment and gain insight into potential career pathways.

My experience at Melbourne Theatre Company has been very positive. The team has been welcoming and supportive, and people have been willing to answer questions and explain different aspects of their work. I felt included in the environment, particularly during rehearsals and discussions. The workplace itself is structured but not overly formal, which makes it easier to learn and engage. It was interesting to see how clearly defined roles still allow for collaboration across departments. Overall, it felt like a professional but approachable environment, where everyone contributes to a shared goal while maintaining a strong sense of teamwork.

One of the most impactful parts of my placement was observing rehearsals for Shoelace Chaser. This gave me a clear insight into how a production develops over time. I was able to see the collaboration between the director and cast, as well as how feedback is given and applied in real time. It was also interesting to learn how technical elements such as set design, lighting, sound, and costumes are discussed alongside performance decisions. This experience highlighted how many different components need to come together to create a cohesive production, and how important communication is throughout the process.

During the placement, I developed a better understanding of communication and teamwork within a professional creative environment. I learned the importance of asking clear questions and actively listening to others. I also gained insight into problem-solving, particularly how challenges are approached collaboratively rather than individually. Organisation was another key takeaway, as there are many moving parts within a production that require careful coordination. In terms of mindset, I learned that creativity is not just about ideas, but also about adaptability and being open to feedback. This experience helped me see how structure and creativity work together in the industry.

This placement has expanded my understanding of the different career paths within the theatre industry. While I have always been interested in performing arts, I am now more aware of the range of roles available beyond performing. In particular, I am interested in stage management and marketing, as both involve a combination of creativity and organisation. The experience has encouraged me to consider how I can be involved in the industry in different ways, and has given me a clearer idea of what skills I may need to develop in the future. Overall, it has helped me feel more confident about exploring careers within this field.
