Melbourne Theatre Company Artistic Director Brett Sheehy AO is delighted to announce that Sarah Goodes and Dean Bryant will join the MTC artistic team as Associate Directors.
‘We’re thrilled that two directors of the calibre of Sarah and Dean are joining the MTC team. I have been a fan of the work of both of these artists for some years, Sarah’s work at Sydney Theatre Company especially, and Dean’s nationally. We are already in discussions with each of them about projects in MTC’s 2017 Season, and I look forward to the unique impact they will have on both the Company and the broader theatre landscape in Melbourne and beyond,’ Brett Sheehy said.
MTC Associate Directors play an integral role in the Company, assisting with the artistic operations, supporting the development of new works and directing mainstage productions.
Sarah Goodes has garnered a reputation as a leading director of new Australian and international work, attracting critical acclaim and multiple award nominations for her productions including Switzerland, Battle of Waterloo, The Effect and Orlando. Following a sell-out season at STC where she is currently Resident Director, Sarah’s production of Switzerland is playing at MTC in September this year.
Sarah Goodes said, ‘I am absolutely delighted at the opportunity to join the team at Melbourne Theatre Company as Associate Director. I am a huge fan of MTC’s work and am very excited about working with Brett whose work I have followed for years. Being a graduate of VCA I look forward to living in the artistically inspiring city of Melbourne again and creating work along side and with the incredible artists in the state.’
Dean Bryant is one of Australia’s most in demand freelance directors with a raft of national and international accolades to his name. His impressive string of directing credits includes Little Shop of Horrors; Sweet Charity, for which he won the Helpmann Award for Best Director of a Musical; and, for MTC, I’ll Eat you Last starring Miriam Margolyes. Later this year he is directing Colin Friels and Anna Samson in MTC’s revival of Skylight.
Dean Bryant said, ‘I’m beyond thrilled to be stepping off the freelance merry-go-round and anchoring at the MTC – it’s truly my dream job. I began my career with the company and have returned joyfully many times since – I can’t wait to work with Brett and the team at a Company that I love.’
Dean and Sarah will commence their new roles fulltime from 2017.
