It’s a gorgeous thing: the stage has everything that opens and closes, and the steeply raked, European-style auditorium makes watching a play a wholly pleasurable experience.
Located in the Southbank Theatre building, the Sumner is a state-of-the-art 500-seat venue offering the most advanced stage technology and a level of intimacy not previously seen in Australia. Named after our first Artistic Director, John Sumner, the Sumner has been designed to provide comfort and excellent stage views for all the audience, with a flexible stage that allows MTC to present the entire gamut of theatre – from large scale spectacles down to tightly-focused dramatic performances.
How To Get Here
The Sumner is located within Southbank Theatre, which is within 10 minutes walking distance of Flinders Street Station – simply head south down St Kilda Road past Arts Centre Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria, and turn right down Southbank Boulevard. The Theatre, with its distinctive white piping, cannot be missed.
The theatre is also easily accessible by tram, via Route 1 to South Melbourne Beach (which stops directly in front of Southbank Theatre), and all other trams that pass down St Kilda Road (simply alight at the Arts Centre Melbourne stop and walk to the theatre).
