Frequently Asked Questions

Are there Baby Change Facilities at Southbank Theatre?

Yes, Baby Change Facilities are located inside the accessible toilets on the ground floor and level 1.

Is Southbank Theatre wheelchair accessible?

Yes. MTC is committed to making performances accessible to the widest possible audience. If you or your child have access requirements, we are happy to accommodate you. Please make your requirements known when booking. For more information about the various services we offer, click here.

How do I know if a production is suitable for my child?

MTC’s Parents Guide contains information about the age-appropriateness of each production to help you make the right choice.

My child has an assistance animal; can we bring it to the theatre?

Assistance animals are welcome at our venues and water bowls can be provided on request. Please make your requirements known when booking.

Can I take drinks inside the theatre?

Drinks purchased from the foyer bars are allowed inside the auditorium for most performances. These will be served in plastic cups. Audience members may bring their own bottled water or there are drinking fountains located in the foyers.

Can I purchase food for my child at Southbank Theatre?

While grown-ups will enjoy the refreshments available at Southbank Theatre, it is unlikely that you’ll be able to purchase your child’s favourite snack. Keeping in mind the length of performances, your child is more likely to enjoy the show if they’ve eaten something beforehand. Food is not permitted inside the auditorium.

Is there a cloak room available at Southbank Theatre?

Coats, bags, umbrellas and bulky items may be cloaked at the Southbank Theatre Cloakroom free of charge. The cloakroom will be open 45min prior to the performance. The cloakroom closes 15min after the performance. If you’re bringing a school group, please be mindful that we have limited storage space in our cloak room. School students should leave their large school bags at school or bring a small bag to stow under their seat. MTC does not assume responsibility for cloaked items, so you may wish to advise students to keep valuables with them.

What happens if we need to leave the auditorium during the show?

Should your child need to visit the restroom during a show, or leave the auditorium for any reason, please be mindful that you may not be re-admitted to the auditorium until a suitable point in the performance. Every show is different, so it’s best to ask the usher if you’re unsure.

I’ve never been to MTC before. How do I get there? Where can I park?

Street parking is limited near the venue, but there are many secure car parks within easy walking distance of Southbank Theatre. There are four disabled parking spaces along Dodds Street, each with a four hour restriction. For more information about getting to our venues, access, parking, dining and accommodation, click here.

What happens if I’m running late?

MTC reserves the right to admit latecomers only when/if there is a suitable break in the performance, and to relocate seating. Management reserves the right to refuse admission; this policy is to prevent disruption to other patrons and the performance.

MTC’s Latecomer Policy is available here.

Is there an ATM at Southbank Theatre?

There are no ATMs located at the Southbank Theatre. The nearest ATM is on the far side of the Arts Centre Melbourne carpark. It can be accessed through the Arts Centre Melbourne Carpark entrance nearest to St Kilda Road.
